1. Assess Your Electricity Use

Every good solar design starts with your usage, not with a panel count. Pull 12 months of electric bills and look at your total kilowatt-hours (kWh) for the year, plus which months spike — in Texas, that is usually summer, when air conditioning runs hardest.

Think ahead, too. Are you planning to buy an electric vehicle, add a pool, or electrify anything in the home? A system sized only for today's usage can leave you buying grid power for tomorrow's additions. A good designer will ask about your plans before sizing anything.

2. Check Your Roof's Suitability

Three things matter most about your roof: direction, shade, and condition.

  • Direction and pitch. South-facing roof planes get the most sun in the Northern Hemisphere, but east and west faces can work well — especially in Texas, where west-facing panels catch strong afternoon sun that matches peak air-conditioning demand.
  • Shade. Trees, chimneys, and neighboring buildings can cut production. Your installer should do a shade analysis — not just eyeball it — before promising output.
  • Condition. Panels last decades, so your roof should, too. If your roof is near the end of its life, replacing it before the array goes on saves you the cost of removing and reinstalling panels later. 3. Get Multiple Quotes

Get at least two or three quotes, and insist each one is based on an actual look at your roof and bills — not a generic package. Every quote should include:

  • Total system size (in kW) and estimated first-year production (in kWh)
  • Itemized equipment: panels, inverters, and battery storage if included
  • The full installed price, plus any fees — with the payment schedule
  • Production guarantee terms, equipment warranty terms, and workmanship warranty, in writing
  • Who handles permits, inspections, and the utility interconnection process

If a quote cannot tell you the expected annual production, you cannot evaluate the price per kWh it delivers — and that is the number that actually matters.

4. Compare Equipment

You do not need to become an engineer, but you should know what you are buying in general terms. Compare panels on efficiency and warranty length, inverters on warranty and whether they convert power per-panel or for a whole row, and battery storage on usable capacity and whether it can keep your home running during an outage.

5. Understand the Contract

Before signing, read the whole agreement — especially these sections:

  • Scope of work: exactly what is installed, and what is not (roof repairs, electrical upgrades, trenching).
  • Price and payment schedule: what you pay, when, and what triggers each payment (a deposit tied to milestones, not to a salesperson's timeline).
  • Timeline: estimated dates for permits, installation, inspection, and utility permission to operate.
  • Warranties and guarantees: equipment, workmanship, and any production guarantee — with claim procedures.
  • Cancellation terms: your right to cancel and any fees.

6. Installation and Activation

Once you sign, the typical sequence is: permits are filed, equipment is ordered, the crew installs the racking, panels, and inverter (usually a few days of on-roof work), the system is inspected by the local authority, and finally your utility grants permission to operate and swaps or reprograms your meter.

The full process — from signature to flipping the switch — generally takes weeks rather than days, mostly because of permitting and utility scheduling. Ask your installer for a realistic timeline up front, and who your point of contact is at each stage.

Red Flags to Avoid

Walk away from installers who:

  • Use high-pressure tactics — "this price expires today," or refuse to leave a written quote for you to review.
  • Cannot show you the expected annual production figure for your specific roof.
  • Keep contracts vague: no itemized equipment list, no warranty documents, no timeline.

  • Ask for large payments before any work or permits exist.
