Why Michigan Is a Real Solar State

Michigan gets less sun than the Sun Belt — we won't pretend otherwise. But solar doesn't need desert sun to pencil out; it needs real bills, a workable tariff, and honest math. Michigan has all three.
Here's the honest version: Michigan's winters are real, and panels produce less in December than in June. But panels generate whenever there is light — including overcast days — and cold air doesn't hurt them. Systems here are sized around annual production, so the long summer days carry the slower winter months. Shading matters more than latitude: a clean, south-facing roof in Michigan will outperform a shaded roof in Arizona.
What Michigan does offer is a genuine reason beyond the bill math: storm seasons. Lake-effect snow, ice storms, and high-wind events all knock power out, and a grid-tied system with battery backup keeps essentials running when the grid doesn't. For many Michigan homeowners, resilience is the point as much as savings.
The 2026 Incentive Picture
Michigan runs its incentive picture differently than most states — and 2026 brought the same federal changes everyone else got. Here's where things stand plainly:
- Distributed generation tariff, not net metering: Michigan replaced traditional net metering with an inflow/outflow tariff. Power your panels produce and you use behind the meter offsets the full retail rate; power you export to the grid earns an outflow credit tied to the power-supply portion of the rate — meaningfully less than retail. That gap makes self-consumption (using your power as you make it) the most valuable design strategy in Michigan. Most residential systems fall in the program's Level 1 tier (20 kW and under), and interconnection application fees are capped at a modest amount.
- Owned systems: the residential clean-energy credit (Section 25D, 30%) expired for homeowner-owned systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. In 2026, the direct federal credit for a purchased residential system is 0% unless Congress enacts new legislation.

- Property-tax protections: Michigan law (Public Act 116 of 2019) excludes residential solar panels from a property's true-cash-value assessment, so adding solar shouldn't raise your property assessment — and qualifying systems that offset the property's energy use and produce under 150 kW carry personal-property-tax protections. Confirm the current application with your assessor or a tax professional.
- No state income-tax credit, no statewide rebate: Michigan offers no state-level income-tax credit and no statewide solar rebate. What Michigan offers instead of checks is the tariff itself — which quietly decides more dollars over a system's life than most states' rebate programs.
